the LinkedIn Presbyter (mascot?)

was trying to check out the linkedin invitation a friend sent to me.
but it shows the page below (they are upgrading the system right now.

at the first sight, it was just a notification. Then the linkedin man caught my attention.
it looks like someone. what do you think? any idea on your side?

I call it the Linkedin Presbyter, so much like Reid Hoffman, the founding CEO of linkedin.

Disagree with me? well, take a closer look. ^^

The Presbyter looks so approachable and caring.

Nation-wide Mourning for May 12 China Earthquake Including the monochromic Internet

May 19-21 are the three days of the national mourning for the victims who died on May 12 Wenchuan, Sichuan Earthquake. By now, the death toll has reached 34,073, reported by CCTV.

Besides, the people in China are mourning for the victims by not involving in any entertainment activities of any sort, wearing dark color dresses etc.. The Chinese internet seems synchronously followed the same monochromic look on their sites.

I've checked most of the frequently visited Chinese websites of mine. They all presented the similar monochrome color- the black & white theme to show their condolences and sympathy to the victims in the catastrophic earthquake took place on May 12 2:28pm (GMT +8) with its epicenter at Wenchuan, Eastern Sichuan, China.

Here are some examples.

Fake McDonald's Career page?

I was browsing my friends blog just now and saw there was an ad for McDonald's part time jobs.

It looks like this

[ad image]

I clicked on it... to see what it is about? I never worked in McD. don't think i am gonna work there. just out of curiosity, i clicked on it.

the following page showed up. It looks like it's from McD but... I just feel that it's might be a mock to collect info of thousands... who knows...

[page image]

I typed www.mcdonalds.com.sg ... that one works... i visited before, so there is no problem there.
checked the www.mcdonalds.com.sg/recruitment it showed something sensible...

then i clicked on "apply now"...
what is it about?

the same URL that the ad linked to http://mcdsg.workstarglobal.com/

Thus, the ad should be REAL then. Thank Goodness!

Gosh! Why cannot McD Sg just set up something on their site instead of rerouting to other URL that appears so not trusting.

well... maybe I am to suspicious about the real identity of a site an Google ad links to.

Can all Google Ads be trusted?

Churchill Club: Top 10 Tech trends debate

I think you might be wondering once in a while...

"What's new?"
"How the market is like in 1 year, 2 years, 5 years or even 10, 20, 30 years?"
"What's gonna make it big in the near future?"
"What are the hot spots in tech?"
...
etc.

Here is a list that you can think about and see whether they click with your thoughts.

my thoughts are:
1. mobile devices gonna be hot in the techie community
a. iPhone - applications, distribution channels, 3G and its related peripheral markets
b. phone OS - designed for techies and tech-savvy users to play around and customize their own phones... so which phone manufacturer will produce mobile phones that allows the geeks to crash their phone. Nokia?
c. mobile services... data plans (teleco), mobile widgets, mobile shopping... text messages in US

2. Clean Tech... alternative energy... this hype will never die off. I guess you will see some applicable alternative energy technology in the market in 2009 and 2010. lots of initiatives started in around 2006 and hope to see some results soon. at least pioneering initiatives.
Who's gonna lead? Technology will be the US but the practitioners will be China and European countries because of their strong government support and subsidies.

3. I feel strongly that there is gonna be some breakthrough in bio-tech in curing and treatment in 2009. maybe something for Aids will be in the market that cheap enough (relatively) for people to purchase.

4. enterprise 2.0 starting end of 2008 - 2010... it's gonna be huge... many enterprises are waking up from their hibernation after their first four season in the 1.0 world. Yes.. the spring is coming and it's time to wake up and get some fresh food.

Baidu cutomized its logo for China Earthquake

My coworker loaded Baidu.com page as his home page on his Firefox browser (Chinese Simplified). I saw the logo appeared weird and it was black and white and i thought it was for something.

Yes... then I tried on my browser...

typed: baidu.com

(loading page)

(paged loaded)

then, this logo came out!

it is to announce or call for help or memorize for the Sichuan earthquake took place on May 12 at 2:28pm.

Why does not Google do something about its logo?

Facebook "network" concept vanishes?

I think it was one month ago. Facebook removed its "network" tab on it's home page for users.
I do like the network page and it shows interesting stuff within the network.
I could still access it if I go to my Profile and click on the networks to view the page.
Yesterday (May 14, 2008) I discovered that there are no long hyperlinks for the networks on my profile.
I tried typing "http://www.facebook.com/networks.php" it rerouted to "http://www.facebook.com/networks/networks.php" where you are still able to find a way to access to the network page (of your networks). However, you need to search your networks.
Once you are on the page (like the Silicon Valley, CA one), you would see such notification box, announcing "Network Page will be discontinued soon"

Remember I met Ben, from Mobile Monday. We were talking about some "Dark Ages" of Internet due to privacy issues. Does this mean that Facebook has notified the advent of "dark ages" and trying to prevent it from happening? well... if it is really coming, it can only be delayed but not avoided.

Have not found anything announced over the online media about discontinuing the network page from Facebook. Hope they can announce their intention and reasons why they are doing this.

Thanks to Piet, we had an awesome leisure gathering at Centro at Kerry Center, Beijing, China.
Have a safe trip back to Netherlands and catch up with you soon!

China earthquake on twitter May 13

Here are some more tweets tracking on China earthquake.

download the pdf file here.

over 10,000 injuries and deaths have been reported.

after over 40 hours, finally the rescue team managed to reach the epicenter of this earthquake...
feel so sorry and sad for the people.

I saw a beggar walking by after my lunch and he looked like a real homeless person. After the Tsinghua South gate (the road leads to the gate actually) there is a gabbage can next to the steps of the cross-over bridge. He stopped and started digging (some food, I guess). I have a bag of packed (left-over) food. Well, they are still fresh as we just finished eating at Quanjude.
He seemed disappointed as he could not find anything eatable. Then, I passed one package of the food to him. Then he went to the roadside and started eating, bending his body and standing. Looks so pathetic.

Helping the people suffering from the earthquake damages is far and mos of the time we feel so powerless in such situation. As a person, there is so little we can do. At this moment, it is the team work, leaving no-one behind spirit will motivate more and more people to stay strong and get ready to rebuild their life. I know it's tough. The world is trying to help. It will take a couple of years to get recovered from such large-scaled disaster. Hope for the best!

China earthquak on twitter

I followed last night from 8pm till now
tracked 'earthquake' and 'chengdu'

gosh... over 1600 lines.

here is the archive of the tracking...

CCTV Special Broadcasting on Sichuan Wenchuan Earthquake

I turned on the TV while taking a break from work. I found that CCTV 1 was having this special broadcasting program for the earthquake. it's showing the latest info and news from Sichuan province. due to the serious high magnitude of 7.8 earthquake, there are disastrous damages to the epicenter. By now they still don't have picture nor videos from there due to ruined road access to wenchuan county.

cctv has reported that the number of deaths has reached 8533 with time stamped at 11:40pm.
The department of transportation and police is trying to keep the major road access smooth to allow first aids and goods to be transported to Sichuan province. The entire country is trying to help the people in the disaster area.

my condolences to all the people who died in this unexpected disaster and their family members.

so the info of the earthquake is May 12 14:28pm (GMT+8) of magnitude 7.8.
USGS' first hand info was very accurate back then!

updated: the tremor depth was only about 29 km below surface. compared to the 1976 tangshan disastrous earthquake of a similar magnitude, that depth was 11 km and over 242,000 of people died in the tangshan earthquake.

Premier Wen has already arrived at Sichuan to work on relief work with officials. He reached Sichuan about 7:18pm in the evening May 12.

Earthquake in China May 12 14:28

it was around 2:30pm just now. Out of sudden I felt dizzy and developed headache. my co-worker next to me ask me if i felt the earthquake... then he quickly checked online and found this :
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/eqcenter/recenteqsww/Quakes/us2008ryan.html#details
(what you see now is already been updated. 10 minutes ago it was still just very basic info of where it might have take place.)
about over 40 minutes... finally there was a news post by sohu.
it's here: http://news.sohu.com/20080512/n256802637.shtml

my roommate just returned to Sichuan after the May 1st long weekend. I sent him an SMS and he called me back around 3:24pm, almost an hour after the earthquake. He's located in Nanchong (Northe East of Chengdu). He said the telecommunication network was down and it went just back up on. He managed to contact his mom and he called me after that. He said they probably need to stay out tonight. I suggest him get more food at this point of time. Survival is important and food is important.

the Sohu news reported the center of the earthquake is Wenchuan, Sichuan. now news on the situations or any statistics have been reported.

2008 is a year that every Chinese is happily expecting and looking forward to. It is also a year that the entire nation have disasters one after another... the cold disaster, tibetian riats, olympics torch relay cases, the train crash, and NOW it's natural disaster - earthquake... 10 years ago... China was flooded with water in the central and southern part. it's only end of spring and there were already so many things happening. really hope after all these the Beijing 2008 Olympics will create history... the one that shows the pride and proud of the Chinese.

while writing, just got another news covered the earthquake from QQ.com:
http://news.qq.com/a/20080512/002522.htm?qq=0

a friends sent an IM message saying: today is 88 days to the 8-8-08' 8:08:08pm Beijing Olympics. the entire country was shaking to remember the longest 8s ever in history. some more the magnitude of the earthquake is reported as 7.8. Glad that it was not 8.8. (scary!)

hope the friends overseas could get in touch with your family! All the best!
it's time again to test how Chinese government is reacting to the large scale natural disasters.

Beijing, Shanghai and even Hainan all experienced the (sorta nation-wide) shake... especially for people in high-rises.

all this news are being passed around on twitter.com. a twitterer said, " It is amazing the way we can cover news on twitter. Far faster than the professionals."

updated: http://edition.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/asiapcf/05/12/china.quake/index.html

(yes... we started talking about right after the shake... then we know Beijing, Shanghai and many other cities have experienced the earthquake on different levels. that's how fast...

on the other hand, the very first info was found via the US websites. How grassrootie are they!!! =p it's almost within 5minutes the info was up on the site and after 40 minutes, it was updated again. all faster than the news professions here in China.. well it could be well understood that the network was down (might still be down) but then, how did the USGS found out about the earthquake in China. You've gotta believe in technology, don't you? try watching "Iron Man" )

BASE event May 8th

it's the first time we tried twittering at the very beginning of the event while waiting for attendees to arrive. It's fixed at 7pm but people do not come until about 8pm or something. =) I guess the reason is that there's no speaker to attract them to be here.

David Feng and I had a conversation about the topic. the topic is a question:
"What are the current characteristics of the growing internet use in China that are different from the historical growth of the Internet use in the US?"

This question is rather to help the entrepreneurs who want to understand the Chinese Internet market... I am a native Chinese myself and I started using Internet on a regular basis is rather 2000 as far as I can remember. I entered high school in 2000 and the school just installed PC for each classroom to aid the teaching. It was great. The on-campus students could make the PC in their classroom more useful there. In the same year, we finally bought our first PC (not branded) in my house. It was meant for my mother to learn some computer skills but the PC was finally bought at the price RMB 2000 more over the budget. It was me who influenced the decision. The computer now is still sitting in my room, trying to look new. Unfortunately, the appearance can be deceiving but the sound does not. it's loud and noisy.

after I left China in 2002, all my Chinese internet experiences were sort of ceased and developed very little since then. My venture in the English Internet experiences started and it developed faster and faster especially during my stay in Silicon Valley from August 2006 to August 2007, the one year entrepreneurial journey there. It went great and I managed to get in touch with the most cutting edge technology and the pioneers of the new Internet services providers/builders/developers. so the Chinese one was left bank or rather undeveloped during the past 6 years. what a pity! If you ask me, why does Baidu is more successful in China than Google?
My answer to that could be very shallow because I did not understand the Chinese market. I can admit that 'NOT AT ALL". So this trip back to China is to help me regain the Chinese Internet experiences and get the mentality development process started! I did not realize that till the discussion of May 8th discussion.

Thanks to Dong Huang's sharing at the end. He used to work in Sina and now he's an entrepreneur working on his own company on technology consulting.

Let me start with what David Feng has shared with us.

David F. has been in China since 2000. He was at Switzerland during 1988-2000. He was born in China.

basecn: very cool... nice... well... that's the period of the fast economy development.

DF:
Yup, real fast... especially with what we have right now.

basecn:
today we want to talk about what characteristic of the growing use of internet use in CHina. We also want to compare that with the US one. how's your internet experiences like so far? especially in China?

(

basecn:
i started using internet on a regular basis starting in 2000... it's kinda when you started in china
DF:
My first Net link was back in 1995, first email account in 1998, back on CN Internet for good starting late August 2000. I've been in "hiding" till late 2005, when I (only then!) first started blogging...
)

DF:
We have to content with invisible sites in China, but hey, being on the ground for 8 years, I get used to it or reroute around.
They don't call it the People's Republic for nothing. Just the SHEER number of netizens in the PRC. This is absolutely amazing.

basecn:
what are the three things you want to say about the growing china internet?

DF:
First, there's a bit of rail-linking to do. Folks in China have to get a bit of what the Net is outside the nation. People outside China have to be clued in what's happening inside the PRC. I did blognation China and techblog86 to this end.

Second thing about the Chinese Internet is that I hope we get access to more information. And I mean healthy information. Multiple voices on a single topic would be pretty good. Let the flowers bloom.

Finally, I hope that we get more Tweeters in China. Twitter is a fan-freaking-tastic "thing" and me love it! :-D

basecn:
i agree with you on the information access. i found that it is just easier in the English world...

do you think it is because the web is more organized?

DF:
In fact in terms of organization, quite a bit of those sites in China are a tad difficult to navigate... even in Chinese...

davidatsg:
most of the Chinese websites are flooded wth information, ads, and texts ... just too much...
what's your opinion about that?

DF: That's the thing I don't like. We have too many semi-porno ads on even the news sites. It's absolutely disgusting.

davidatsg: well... another thing is that the english ones look very clean and neat

DF:
Thing is not all look clean and neat I think, but quite a few do. Chinese sites can be clean, too, if efforts are made. I mean imagine reading the latest subway news with a semi-done lady ad next to the text. Totally sick-o. This "ca bian" (擦邊)-ism has got to stop. For good. I don't mind the ads. I just don't like those that have little or no taste and cater just to your money and nothing else.

davidatsg:
you are right... so... i don't really experience the development of the US internet development... do you see any similar patterns happening in China that happened to the US one? what's your opinion on that?

DF:
I'm of the opinion that the Web is to serve everyone, not just those people looking for "刺激".

Finally I believe the Net extends our daily lives (real lives!). As a result I favor a real-name registration system.

I mean what we say on the Web is part of us. There's no escaping. The anonymous era is pretty much over as I see it.

Having said that, I favor RESPONSIBLE freedom of speech. Speak ahead -- but BE RESPONSIBLE and stand by what you say.

The Chinese Internet will only go up and up. Only 200M are wired up. The PRC is 1.3B+.

There's nothing scary about using your real name on the Internet. Use it well and it "adds glamor" to you (so to speak).

Don't see anything too clear here, except for that I use the Web not for games, but to get actual things done... ;-)

davidatsg:
any cultrual differences you see here?

DF:
But then again I do see a bit of a difference in the West and China. On the Chinese Web people are more "人情". But then again on the Western Internet, the so-called "nobody" can speak freely, too. In China it's much the same, but...
Having said that, people in China "favor" those with authority or with a proven track record. Nothing bad about it, tho'.

davidatsg:
yes... we know DavidFeng... don't we.... is that a real name?

DF:
Yup, @DavidFeng is David Feng. It's "real". ;-)
I am afraid I'll have to run. Tweet to you after about 21:45! :-)
and the rest -- feel free to tune it at 20:00 if you wish! Thanks for the twinterview! ;-) And all the best to tonight's BASE. I'm sure it'll be great. All the best! :-)
Thanks for having me. All the best! :-)

davidatsg:
thank you verymuch! "DavidFeng"... enjoy your radio show and we will catch up on twitter and the tweet meet up (end of twinterview)

I was using twhirl and it was kinda slow to receive the so fast updates from DavidFeng. I was not able to follow him very closely. I guess twhirl is definitely not good for twinterview then. way too slow to get message out and in at the same time. Thank you very much, David! We will try another time and make it a much better one, for sure!!! =)

later on, Resh presented her own work on pseudolocal.com and tracy pitched her conference at PKU/Tsinghua.

the group discussion did not start really well because not many people shared their view. Resh and Tracy tried to start the conversation but people might not be ready for it. In fact, I had a short conversation with a few local attendees in Chinese and we talked about the Chinese Internet markets. They mentioned so many interesting characteristics that I did not understand about the Chinese market. Yes, they experienced the development of the Chinese Internet development. Later I invited him to share with us about what's his view. He spoke in Chinese and I translated for him. He said:

the Chinese internet markets is so different from the US one. In China, it was all started with the news portal, like Sina, Sohu. Sina and Sohu are not content providers but rather more like agents to pull all kinds of information from other places and put all together at a news portal. thus, the new portal really worked here in China and many other websites grew, NetEase (163.com) etc. Don't forget the media in China is controlled by the government. The Chinese website cannot be like the vertical news site in the US. for example, US can have a news site tailored just for sports. and the sports site is both the content provide as well as the portal. but it cannot be like that in China in the vertical manner. Content is censored.

Why Baidu is more successful in terms of ads in China than Google? (higher CTR)
The main business values and beliefs are different for the two companies. Google is user centric and Baidu is business-centric. Because of that, the way ads being displayed are so different now.
(I guess it really has something to do with the characteristics of the netizens in China. as DavidFeng said earlier, they don't believe anyone but some sort of authority figures). How different?
Google puts ads in texts formats on the side of the search page. But Baidu puts the ads within the search results and on the side of the search results. It has a lot to do with the business beliefs. The Chinese mentality is that if you pay to advertise, it must be something worth advertising and the ads really want to get people's attention (CTR). as the users, they believe that if somebody is paying some big amount money to display some ads at some prominent places, it ought to be something great or useful. Because of that, the users clicks more on Baidu. more clicks attracts more enterprises to advertise on Baidu.

[Baidu ads picture]
[Google ads picture]

He also shared with the attendees that the netizens in the Chinese Internet Markets can be categorized into three: one is to obtain fame, generate awareness of him/her - social status; one is to gain materialistic benefits; and the last one is the SO-BORED people that have nothing to do but to surf the net.

the first blogging provider in China is blogchina.com but it did not make people blog and blogging did not take off as a common thing on the net. who did? Sina.com did. It provides the super star a place to talk about what they do (blogging), which attracted so many readers and generated awareness not only for sina, sina blogging but also blogging in general. [The Chinese people are naturally more introvert and not too expressive but they are looking for other people's privacy and gossips, especially the super stars. he added] as you may know, the most viewed blog is xu jinglei's sina blog.(so you can imagine how it worked there.) Sina till today is still the top one blogging provider in terms of readership and membership.

because there are so many so-bored internet users, entertainment on the net has been a common place for the Chinese websites, even down to simple SNS applications. A similar application to "friends for sales" on facebook is called friends trades (朋友买卖) on Kaixin. If you paid some virtual $ to buy a friend that is on your friend list, you could assign some tasks to him to do, like clean the toilet, get starved for a day etc. These are very entertainment centric for the users. [maybe we can interpret that to certain extent a web shall be of entertaining values to users in China]

Thanks to his sharing and it really made me think of the Chinese Internet market different today.

Looking forward to more sharing next time. it's on May 22, thursday!

Continue my Blogs - BASE Updates

It's been really exciting lately.
There are multiple events going on and I feel very motivated and of course excited.

BASE - Beijing Angels and Startup Entrepreneurs

we have a Facebook Page and you can find it here. It is a non-profit organization a few of friends are running right now. Of course, I am the playing the coordination role in all the planning and execution. It's fun doing it, since I like helping people and organizing stuff. What we do here? We organize meet-ups for Web entrepreneurs in Zhongguancun Haidian, Beijing, China (Asia...) Both local and foreign entrepreneurs are very welcomed. You are the key people here! We believe in sharing, being open, helping one another and most importantly keep updated on what's going on here in Beijing, in China as well as else where in the big (and kinda small) world.

The main events are free to all. You need to buy and pay for your own food and drinks at our venue Urban Backyard (http://tinyurl.com/3rktr6), an Italian restaurants opened by three architects in China. It's a three-story restaurant. You can find vegetarian hot pot (steam boat) on the third level. the 2nd floor which is the main one, is primary a bar and the restaurant. The basement is the REAL western dining area that has very nice ambiance and lighting. The food there is okay and it's pretty expensive in the Wudaokou area. But there is free Internet connection there and it's really fast. I could even access blogger.com there. Have not tried wikipedia yet. Will try tomorrow 'cause it's BASE event (http://tinyurl.com/6jj5xv). Please feel free to join us! we are going to answer to this question:

"What are the current characteristics of the growing internet use in
china that are different from the historical growth of the internet use
in the US?"

What's new this time is that: we are going to use twitter to start some small conversations online. @DavidFeng (twitter.com/DavidFeng) will join us at 7pm to start the conversation. Initially I wanted to invite him to join us this time and to share with us "why does he simply tweet so much every day?" by now he has already passed the 5000 tweet mark and marching for the higher one. that's really a lot! I still have 100 over to reach 500. It's like he's been sending over 5000 texts in the whatever time-span it is.

after the tweets, we will start our conversation per normal. people will be in their small groups and start networking... post-it and pens will be provided and they can write their thoughts down any time and post it on a wall before they leave. we will collect all the post-its and make it available online at Resh's wiki site (http://www.pseudolocal.com/). it's nice. By the way, you can find our previous meeting notes for the past two events (April 10 and April 23).

What else you can expect? Resh is going to present to us at the event! (Finally! She wanted to present during last event but she was not able to do it. ) Looking forward to it. There is other demo signed up. I don't know why. Maybe we have not publicize this event earlier enough. hopefully, we can do faster the next time.
